Wales currently uses Great Britain sterling currency.

BACKGROUNDER
Wales has been authorized to issue it's own local bank currency since the 19th century. Thanks to Pam West (see below) and Don Cleveland we have now displayed a number of these scarce issues. One particularly interesting issue issue pictures William Shakespeare on the face of a  £5 note from the Stratford upon Avon Old Bank Branch of the Stourbridge & Kidderminster Banking Company

Additional local currency notes were issued in 1969 by the  Treasurer R. Williams who signed the notes. Issued by the Chief Treasury of Wales, Ltd., which was a privately owned "national treasury". Five denominations were issued with the treasury being required to add stamp duty of 2 Pence to each note which they accomplished with an embossed blue seal. These should probably be considered private issues as they most likely did not circulate under government authorization.

Also shown is a "fantasy" note honoring the immensely popular Princess Diana of Wales

Wales currently uses the British sterling pence, shilling and pound for it's currency.
