BACKGROUNDER

We gratefully acknowledge numismatist Walt Jellum who provided many of the above images.

W.F.K.ChristieThe left side of this series of banknotes pictures Wilhelm Frimann Koren Christie, Speaker of the Storting (Parliament) from its founding in 1814 thru 1818. W.F.K.Christie retired from politics in 1820 and devoted his time to the founding of the Bergen Museum in 1825. The Museum also lead to the founding of the University of Bergen in 1946.

The right hand side of some notes pictures Admiral Peder Tordenskjold (Peter Wessel), a famous Danish naval hero. Born 28.10.1691 in Trondheim, he rose to the rank of Vice-Admiral in the Royal Danish Navy based on his outstaAdmiral Tordenskjoldnding service in the Great Northern War. After many sea conquests he returned to Denmark in 1716 and was given the title of Tordenskjold (Thundershield). On 20.10.1720 he was killed in a duel with a Livonian colonel, Jakob Axel Stael von Holstein.

Tordenskjold's childhood home is now a National Museum of Music and Musical Instruments called Ringve. Surrounding the estate is the Ringve Botanical Gardens which includes and old English garden from the 1800's.
