Abdul
Ilah at-Ta`if of Hejaz
was regent of Iraq from 1939-53. He wa s
the son of Ali ibn Hussein حسین بن
علی, Hashemite King of the Hejaz (right).
When Saudi Arabia
was formed by Abdul Aziz
عبدالعزيز آل سعود in 1925 he and his father
were driven from Hejaz to Iraq.Upon the death of King Ghazi غازي in a mysterious car accident in 1939, he was appointed regent for his three-year-old nephew, Faysal II, son of King Ghazi. Abdul Ilah was a strong Iraq nationalist but relied on the British and the tribal sheikhs to maintain his power. During World War II Ilah acquiesced to the British and his government supported the occupation. When Rashid Ali al-Gaylani رشيد عالي الكيلاني succeeded Nuri as-Said نوري السعيد as prime minister, the situation changed rapidly as Rashid established close ties with Nazi Germany in order to expel the British. Abdul Ilah tried to get Rashid Ali to resign but in 1941 Rashid had the palace surrounded by his army. Ilah and his entourage fled to Basra then to Transjordan. The British then landed their forces at Basra suppressing the revolt. Abdul Ilah was reinstated as regent, maintaining good relations with the West. King Faysal II attended school in Britain with his close cousin, King Hussein of Transjordan حسين بن طلال. It has been reported that they discussed joining their nations at some point in time. On May 2, 1953, King Faysal II assumed his thrown and Ilah relinquished his duties as regent. He remained as an adviser to Faysal II and became crown prince. Both Ilah, King Faysal II and other family members were killed on July 14, 1958 during a palace coup. Muhammad Najib al-Rubai محمد نجيت الربيعي was installed as head of state with the title of Chairman of Sovereignty Council. |
