ACKNOWLEDGMENT

We gratefully acknowledge numismatist Yezid Acosta who provided the above image and the background information below.

The above 1 Real banknote is from an issue of only 300,000 notes printed in Cartagena to help finance New Grenada's struggle for independence. It was printed on regular paper and had poor acceptance among the people since gold and silver were the coins of the realm. The note was signed by the President of the Junta Patriótica in Cartagena, German Gutierrez de Piñerez. It is reported to be one of only 6 known to have survived.

* This note was listed in the 2000 Colombian Currency Catalog by Pedro Pablo Hernandez, who is considered one of the top authorities on Colombian Currency (page 83 is pictured below.) The 2002 catalog by Bernardo Gonzalez White, (a LANSA member) does not go back to 1813 as it only lists notes published under the name El Banco De La Republica, the current central bank, which was created in 1923.
