BACKGROUNDER
Click to EnlargeFounded by a peasant farmer turned warrior, Hongwu ruled from 1368 until 1398, as the first Ming dynasty emperor. He created laws that favored peasants by creating self-sustaining communities, keeping taxes low and the granaries full while maintaining the dikes of the Yangtze and Yellow rivers.

Ming wood block prints and porcelain areClick to Enlarge avidly collected today. Its most famous accomplishment was the Great Wall of China.

Ming dynasty banknotes were made from mulberry bark paper and are very large in size. Although more than 600 years old they come on the market regularly. A high quality example can command $3,000 to $5,000, however a lower grade note can be bought for less than $1,000.
